I realized I just posted yesterday, and I don't want to be posting every single day, but I just have to get this rant out of my system. Have you heard of the show "Wild Recon" on Animal Planet? Well, you may have recently seen previews for this on their channel, but the guy who runs the show thought he would show everyone how macho he is. He went to Las Vegas and locked himself in a clear room chuck full of snakes for several days. There were many different species of snakes, both venomous and non-venomous and vastly different in size. This is extremely stressful for snakes as they didn't have hiding places or proper heating and humidity. Also, there were some snakes in there that specialize in eating other snakes. His stunt is equivalent to packing a room full of dogs, cats, horses, cows, grizzly bears, lions, etc. Many of the snakes would potentially hunt each other, and they were forced to live in extremely crowded conditions with no place to hide which is not natural for snakes which are generally solitary, shy animals. Afterwards, most of the snakes were killed. My advisor was able to rescue one of the venomous animals from death and we recently saw it at the clinic. It was extremely stressed and sick from the experience and may not survive.
Come on people; even if you hate snakes, how can we even consider that this is remotely humane for the animals. And yet people turned up in droves to oooh and ahhh about some macho guy in a room with a bunch of completely stressed out snakes. Thanks for tolerating my complaints, this kind of stuff just really ticks me off.

Wow. Animal Planet is sounding more and more like HSUS and PETA by the second: they say they care about animals, and then they do stunts like this.
ReplyDeleteIgnoring the abuse in the room, why in the world were the snakes killed afterward?!?! What possible reason could they come up with for that?
Dude, this needs to be publicized like crazy so that Animal Planet can get their butts kicked for this!!! ARGH.
