Today Scott was able to take the day off work and we headed off to one of the state parks that is not too far away from where we live. We decided to take the bikes since the last time we were there we just hiked around. It was actually a sunny day here so we were especially happy about that! Overall we went somewhere between 13 and 14 miles round trip and started at about 350 feet in elevation at the parking lot and stopped at Wallace Lake which was at about 1800 ft in elevation. It started out fairly warm and dry and I was actually feeling quite warm in my jacket. The forest was beautiful, all the deciduous trees and the ferns are on their way to coming out.
The views of the mountains as we got higher were wonderful.
With about 1.5 to 2 miles to Wallace lake, to Sage’s absolute delight and our horror, we ran into snow….lots of snow. 6-8 inches deep on the road in some places, and 6-8 inches deep of mud in all the rest. We decided to tough it out, and slog through the mud and snow. By then I was wishing I had worn long pants. But was still having fun.
At last we reached the lake, and it was worth it! It was beautiful. We only wished it was 40-50 degrees warmer so we could take a relaxing swim!
The way back was almost all downhill so it was very fun racing through the forest and snow on our bikes. On some of the drier, wider roads we got up to a bit over 20 miles per hour, and Sage was able to keep up! I had no idea she could run so fast! Now we are back at home, have had dinner, and all three of us are pretty tired, but it was a fun day!

Still love that lake picture!! Perfect symmetry! But the mountains.... *sigh* Wonderful mountains! They're so pretty!

How would you rate the steepness of the trail with respect to the trail we used to bike in Saguaro East (the more difficult side of the trail)? I had trouble with some of the steep parts of that trail, so I bet I'd be too much of a wus to go riding down a steep mountain/forest trail any faster than probably 10 or 12 mph! Hee hee.

ReplyDeleteThanks! The trail in Saguaro east was difficult because there was a lot of steep ups and downs and the trail was really narrow. About half the trail we rode on here was wide enough that a car could drive on it and the grade wasn't anything really steep, just steadily up. Some places we had to go really slow where the trail was narrow, rocky, and steep (or muddy!). I'll bet you could have easily gone as fast as us on the trail we were zipping down. : )
